Period Repair Manual + Review

I love to read books. Always have, always will. Whenever I see book recommendations on the forums I frequent, I usually end up buying them or at least looking them up on Amazon.

On a recent perusal of r/pcos, I came across a few people raving about a book called, Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden. It sounded right up my alley so I bought it.

In this post, I will provide some information on the book as well as my review on it!

About the author

The author of this book is named, Lara Briden. She is a naturopathic doctor with her own practice that focuses on hormonal health in women.

Lara has racked up a great amount of experience in this field and claims to have had many happy patients.

What a naturopathic doctor is

This type of medical practice is based on self-healing  through more natural methods. These include botanical medication, special diets, meditation, yoga and more.

To become a naturopathic doctor, one must start off with a bachelor’s degree that includes pre-medical courses. They then will enter a naturopathic medical school which is another four years.

Unfortunately, this type of medicine is considered non-evidence based. The terms, “quackery” and “scammy” are thrown around a lot in conversations about it.

About the book

The Period Repair Manual is a good sized book with a lot of content presented. The overall goal of the book is to help women fix hormonal problems, naturally.

There are different topics that the author touches on. Here are summaries of the information presented in each area:

  • Hormonal/menstrual cycle information: Lara goes in depth about the science behind our hormones and cycles. This includes what hormones our bodies produce, what our menstrual cycles consist of, what our periods should be like and what happens to our hormones as we age.
  • Problems with our menstrual cycles and conditions: The book talks a lot about things that can go wrong in our cycles (i.e. severe cramps and bad PMS) as well as conditions that can make our hormones get wacky. Some of these conditions mentioned are PCOS, endometriosis, inflammatory conditions, thyroid issues, gut microbiome imbalances, perimenopause and menopause.
  • Treatments: Lara has a lot of treatments that she recommends for the aforementioned problems and conditions. Changing up our diets is something she makes a case for. She also talks a lot about how avoiding wheat and dairy products. Some examples of supplements that she prescribes to her patients include turmeric, vitamin D, vitamin B6, NAC, licorice and many more.

Don’t be fooled when looking at these three short summaries-there is a ton of content! The book also includes resources and a list of the supplements she mentioned along with what they can be used for.

My personal review of the book

The Period Repair Manual was an enjoyable read for me. It was very interesting and I could not put it down.

I loved that the scientific explanations are written in a way that many people can understand. This means that readers will not feel alienated which is a wonderful thing.  Also, the way that she breaks up the text using subheadings increases its readability even more.

I have done a lot of reading about hormones but I definitely learned new things from Lara! For example, I experience post-menstrual syndrome which isn’t talked about a lot. In this book, I found out that it is because of my anovulatory cycles (cycles where I failed to ovulate). The author says that means that a lot of the periods I get are not actually true bleeds. Wow!

Reading about supplements is fun for me. I have heard of all of the ones that Lara mentioned but I did not know exactly what they could be used for in regards to hormones. For example, zinc is something the author talks about as being helpful for PCOS and PMS. I had no idea about that!

In my opinion, her stance on diet might be off putting to some. She seems to be against low carb diets which has shown to really help women with PCOS. Also, the “good” diet menu example she gives pretty much only works for those that make a lot of money.

The sections about detoxing the body made me cringe honestly. I have heard about detoxification from quite a few health gurus and it always seemed fake to me.

Lara talked about there being four types of PCOS. This was very interesting to me. I am still not sure which type I would fall under though.

The last thing I want to mention regarding what I liked about the book, is the review at the end. There is so much information that the author provides so it is nice to have some main take-away points.

I would recommend it

The Period Repair Manual had a lot of content and was really interesting. If someone is struggling with their hormones and cycle, this may be a great resource for them.

The author offers many treatments for the variety of issues that women can have. In my opinion, it is probably not a good idea to go out and buy every supplement she mentions though. One should do some extra research on them first.

If birth control is something that a woman wants to be on, that is their choice. This book is just giving alternative options.

Things To Always Have Around For Nausea

You don’t need to spend the whole day by the toilet!

Everyone gets nausea occasionally. It is just a part of life unfortunately. Some of us (like me) experience it more frequently than others due to a variety of reasons.

The good thing is that there are a lot of things available that can help lessen the severity or get rid of the feeling completely. Since I am the self-professed “queen of nausea,” I wanted to make a post showing some good things to have in your house to deal with it.

All of the great OTC options!

Ginger is something many people have heard about when it comes to alleviating nausea. It has even been found to be superior to Dramamine (OTC drug used for motion sickness). The studies show that it can be effective for nausea that stems from chemotherapy, morning sickness, post-operative and other things.

It is good to keep it around in some form. You can get it in capsules, powder, tea, candy and essential oil. I use the capsules and powder on a daily basis due to the other benefits it has.

Vitamin B6 is something that women with morning sickness are recommended to take. While I didn’t use it during my pregnancy (I did not know that it would help with the morning sickness), I have found it works for my nausea flare-ups.

A dosage of 25 mg taken three times a day is said to be really helpful. It is important to not exceed 100 mg because of the risk of nerve damage.

Unisom is an OTC sleep medication that contains an antihistamine in it. Antihistamines are used a lot for allergies but they also treat nausea. It is safe for pregnant women with morning sickness and many have found great relief from it.

It has worked very well for me in the past. I do not use it as much anymore, admittedly . Even though it is a sleep medication, it did not make me tired for some reason. That was great because it meant that I could take it during the day.

Taking more than two of them a day for long periods of time is not recommended.

Nauzene syrup and chewable tablets are awesome to have around!

Syrup (the box on the left)- This is wonderful for people of all ages who are experiencing mild to severe nausea. It is safe and also has a pleasant, light taste. For me it works extremely well-even better than Zofran (a prescription ant-emetic) sometimes. It takes about 20 minutes or a little less to work. I do experience a bit of a “hangover” type effect with it where I am mildly drowsy but it doesn’t bother me.

A dose of the syrup is one or two tablespoons( an adult would need two). This can be repeated throughout the day. I try not to use it very much because the bottles are small and it can get expensive after a while.

Chewable tablets- These are not very tasty to be honest. They are chalky and the flavor is weird. I am still able to choke them down though. Just like the syrup, they take about 20 minutes to work. One dose is four tablets which can be repeated throughout the day. These are good for mild nausea and/or when you have gotten yourself too full from a meal.

Pink Stork is a wonderful company!

Magnesium body spray is great to have around. Not only for nausea but just to get in your magnesium requirement for the day. Being low in magnesium is said to cause nausea among other things.

Even though this Pink Stork (see here: body spray is marketed for pregnant women, I have found that it takes the edge off my nausea.

Peppermint is something that I (and many others) have found to be great for alleviating nausea. The Tummy Drops (see here: peppermint candy is a new product that I found and it works amazingly well. Other ways to get nausea relief from peppermint are by drinking it in tea form, breathing it in and putting the diluted essential oil on your skin (wrists, neck, belly and feet).


There is a brand called BeeYoutiful and they offer great probiotics. One of the products is called Tummy Tuneup (see here: and it is absolutely fantastic for helping with nausea! They really take the edge off quickly. I open them up and dump the powder into my mouth so I don’t have to wait for the capsule to be broken down if I swallow it whole.

They also offer it in a chewable tablet form which works great too.

The above picture is of my motion sickness wrist bands. They can take the edge off of nausea through acupuncture pressure points. They are definitely not the most powerful thing for nausea relief, but I believe they are worth it to have around just in case.

Combining them

These things that I listed can be combined instead of just using one of them at a time. This will provide a stronger anti-nausea effect.

Here are ways you can combine them:

  1. Nauzene syrup + ginger powder- Pour out a dose of the syrup and mix some ginger powder into it.
  2. Ginger + peppermint- You could drink a tea that included both of these things or just use both of them in some form throughout the day.
  3. Ginger + Vitamin B6- Consume ginger in some form at the same time as the B6.
  4. Vitamin B6 + Unisom- Take these two at the same time. This combination is taken by a lot of pregnant women who have morning sickness. It will work for any kind of nausea though.
  5. All of them- I have had days where I used all of these things in one day. Hey, I was extremely desperate!

Nausea is an awful feeling. I have battled chronic nausea ever since I gave birth to my son so I feel for whoever else has to experience it.

The remedies I have listed may not work for everyone but I wanted to share them just in case someone was looking for relief.

Cayenne Pepper: Why It Should Be In Your Kitchen!

We all have our favorite seasonings/spices that we like to use in our cooking. Not only do they provide the flavors that we want, but they can also contain health benefits!

Cayenne pepper has been a staple in our kitchen for a while now. I only recently discovered the ways that it can be good for our bodies.

This post is just an overview on what makes it great and how I use it.

The what and why of cayenne pepper

Cayenne pepper originates from South America. It has been used in food and traditional medicine for 9,000 years!

It contains capsaicin which is a phytochemical. This has been studied for its health benefits. It also has vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, choline, beta carotene and zeaxanthin.

The alleged health benefits of cayenne pepper are as follows:

  • Controls hunger
  • Speeds up metabolism
  • Helps in weight control
  • Has anti-inflammatory effects
  • Prevents and treats ulcers
  • Helps with indigestion
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Helps with pain
  • Reduces bad cholesterol levels
  • Boosts immune system
  • Breaks up congestion
  • Soothes sore throats

Cayenne pepper can be bought in the forms of powder, capsules, alcohol extract, syrups, spray (self-defense) and capsaicin cream. Too much of it consumed by mouth or topically can cause discomfort so you need to be mindful of that.

I love cayenne pepper!

It is great that one of my favorite spices might be healthy for me. This has made me increase my usage of it quite a bit lately.

The boosting of my immune system is important to me due to the virus. With the possibility that cayenne pepper can help in that area, I will continue to use it every day for the foreseeable future.

I currently put generous amounts in my food and green tea. It does not upset my stomach at all which is wonderful.

I would recommend it to other people

Even if scientists can’t give definitive answers as to whether cayenne pepper does the things I listed, it does not hurt to add it into your diet (unless you use too much or get it into sensitive areas on your body, haha!) and daily life.

Align Probiotics + Review

There are all sorts of supplements on the market and some get more press than others. Probiotics are one of the ones that we hear about a lot.

I have been taking probiotics for the past few years now-not all from the same brand and with the same contents. This is due to my chronic stomach problems that need to be fixed.

Recently, I have begun taking probiotics by a brand called, Align Probiotics. In this post, I wanted to discuss and give my review of them.

First, the what and why of probiotics

Here is one yummy way of getting some good bacteria into your gut!

Probiotics are types of bacteria that are said to help instead of harm. People who have not paid attention to probiotics might be surprised to hear that there is such a thing as, “good bacteria.”

Antibiotics are given to kill off bad bacteria due to some illnesses. While that can be a beneficial thing, they also end up killing off the good bacteria that we need. This is where probiotics can come in to help.

There are many different strains of probiotics and researchers have found that certain ones may help certain ailments. For example, one of the strains (called lactobacillus acidophilus) is said assist in vaginal health. Other things probiotics show some evidence for treating include IBS, acne, tooth decay, allergies, C.Diff, constipation, UTIs and our immune systems.

Probiotics can be found in different foods (examples include pickles, yogurt, and sauerkraut), supplement form by a variety of brands and in beauty products.

Align Probiotic 24/7 Digestive Support Capsules

  Align Probiotic is a supplement brand focused on helping consumers with digestion issues. Their probiotic products come in capsule, chewable, gummy, liquid drop (for infants) and powdered drink form.

Some of the products have different strains of bacteria in them. Their 24/7 Digestive Support supplement option contains a strain called, Bifidobacterium 35624.  The brand is said to be the only one on the market that has that particular one in it.

Bifidobacterium 35624 has been studied as being effective for the treatment of IBS and other GI discomforts. The capsules are small and come in blister packs. They are to be taken once per day and do not need to be refrigerated (some other probiotic supplements need to be).

For a box of 63 capsules, the cost is around $40.

My review of the product

I have been suffering from stomach issues for about five years now (I will do another post about that). The issues have occurred multiple times a month. There have been some months where I only have had five good days. The symptoms include intense upper abdominal cramping, bloating and nausea.

Not fun!

I had been taking different probiotic supplements for a couple years prior and they did not seem to help that much. One day in early January, I decided to look up the top-rated probiotics on the market. This was when I came across the Align Probiotics 24/7 Digestive Support.

The positive reviews on this product made me buy it right away. The fact that people were saying that they had a reduction in their own stomach “flare-ups” was really enticing to me.

I began taking them right after they came in the mail knowing that it would probably take a while to make any difference (if it was going to at all).

After starting my “journey” with the new probiotics, I decided to document how my stomach was feeling each day as well as my emotional state and what I had to eat. This was important to me so that I could eventually look back on things to figure out if they are helping me or not.

At the time of making this post, I can honestly say that this product has helped me already. Looking at my documentation, there has been a clear reduction in the amount and severity of “flare-ups” in the past three months. I have only had one and it lasted for two days!

The nausea that I get the day before and the day of my period do not count for this because that is caused by hormones. I do not think probiotics can help hormonal related issues.

In terms of price, these probiotics are not cheap. They are totally worth it to me though and I plan on buying them indefinitely.

Probiotics can be a good choice

There are always going to be conflicting reports on whether supplements are good to take. In my opinion, probiotics show a lot of evidence (both scientific and anecdotal) that they can be beneficial.

If you have gut issues and/or you want to possibly boost your immune system, you might want to try a probiotic supplement. It is important to do your research to find the one that is right for you.

This pandemic has left me extremely nervous and anxious due to the severity of the virus. Because of this, I want to make sure that my immune system is in tip-top shape.

If you want to boost your immune system too…read on! This post may give you some ideas.

The supplements I take daily

I have done a lot of reading on supplements and herbs that show some ability to help strengthen the immune system. This is something I started doing around the time I opened my home daycare business (kids are full of germs!).

I began taking three supplements that I thought would help me get sick less and I have recently increased that amount.

Here is what I take currently and how much:

  1. Ginger capsules (Nature’s Way brand)- Two a day for a total of 1,100 mg
  2.  Colostrum capsules (Jarrow’s brand)- Two a day for a total of 1,000 mg
  3.  Probiotics (Align brand)- One per day
  4. Vitamin C with rosehips (NOW brand)- One per day for a total of 1 gram (see my post on rosehips: Are Rosehips Beneficial For Us? Let’s See What The Studies Say!)
  5. Vitamin D3 (Smart For Life brand)- Two gummies per day for a total of 2,000 IU
  6. Oil of Oregano (Puritan’s Pride brand)- Three soft-gels per day for total of 450 mg (see my post on oil of oregano: Boosting Immunity: Oil of Oregano)
  7. Melatonin- 2 mg in the evening
  8. Turmeric powder- Four teaspoons a day ( see my post on turmeric use: I Hopped on the Turmeric Trend and Here Is Why!)
  9. Green tea- Four cups a day
  10. Cayenne pepper- Not sure the exact amount but I shake a lot on my food and tea.
  11. Broccoli (my favorite thing to eat believe it or not!)- Full of vitamin C. I have two servings or more per day.
  12. Zinc lozenges- Six per day
  13. Garlic- In powder form, on my food (lots!)

These things are not guaranteed to help but so far, they are not hurting me. I am going to keep taking them indefinitely.

The things I do daily

Supplements and nutrition are not the only things that could potentially strengthen our immune systems.

Here is a list of things that I do each day for my health:

  1. Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night
  2. If the weather is nice, I go into my backyard for one hour to soak up even more vitamin D
  3. Hot water breathing- I heat up water until it is boiling, add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to it and then breath the steam in. I do this once in the evening while listening to one of my favorite podcasts.
  4. Exercise- I exercise six times a week.

What I want to add into my day

I am really interested in the benefits that I could gain from doing meditation during the day. My thought is that some stress relieving mental exercises early in the day would be helpful for me.

Being extremely stressed, worried, anxious, depressed etc. all the time can do some damage to our immune systems. It is important to me that I reduce the negative emotions I feel on a daily basis.

I want us all to be as healthy as possible

I hate this virus! I want everyone (including me) to kick its butt if it gets near! That means being able to fight it off well enough that we do not end up with a severe form of it or to just not get it at all.

I hope that what I am doing will help me in some sort of way. If you choose to take/do anything on one of my lists, I hope it helps you too.
