I have had to adjust to my husband’s fragrance allergies over the years. They have increased in severity which means that we have to be even more careful these days.
We have tried many products labeled as being fragrance free-some have worked and some haven’t. I can proudly say that right now we are using some amazing ones that I wanted to share in this post.
If you are interested in using products without fragrances in them…read on!
Fragrances really aren’t that great
Everyone likes to smell good and have the things around them smell good as well. The problem with this is that the chemicals that make up fragrances can have a detrimental effect on people and the environment.
There are thousands upon thousands of chemicals that make up the fragrances that are in many products on the market. There have been several that are shown to most likely be toxic. These include the following:
- Benzyl acetate
- Musk ketones
Unfortunately, there are quite a few more but the above are the ones we know the most about.
There are many people that have actual allergies to these chemicals which prompt a reaction right away after being exposed to them. The symptoms can range in severity depending on the person. They usually include one or more of the following:
- Burning skin
- Flushed skin
- Wheezing/asthma acting up
- Watery eyes
- Runny nose
- Tight chest
- Hives and rashes
Typically when this happens, a person has to leave the environment. If they are having asthma issues, an inhaler is often reached for. They also may have to take an anti-histamine if they have not done so already that day.
This can be really detrimental on them not just physically but socially as well. They may not feel like they are able to go anywhere due to so many people wearing fragrances or there being fragranced cleaning products/air fresheners in the air. This can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety.
It is not just an immediate reaction that people can have when exposed to the fragrances. They also may effect people over time in ways that one probably wouldn’t think. Researchers say the following are the possible long-term effects of fragrance usage:
- Brain fog
- Making allergies worse
- Early puberty
- Infertility in males
- Weight gain issues
It is hard to break up with fragrances because they are in so many different things (hygiene products, toys, cleaning products, packaging, perfumes/colognes, paper products, cat litter and trash bags), but it is important to think about how it may effect yourself and others. You could at least cut down on the amount of perfumes and colognes you use.
The best fragrance-free products
Okay so “best” isn’t the greatest term to use as we all have different experiences with products. The products I am about to list are the ones that are the best for me and I think you may like them too.
So without further ado, here are some amazing fragrance-free products for your face/body/hair and home:
This hand wash by Seventh Generation is our family’s favorite! We use it all the time and love that our hands don’t get dried out from it.
2. Dish detergent- Seventh Generation Dish Liquid Soap
We used to get the Seventh Generation fragrance-free dish soap but Instacart always replaces the above pictured one for it. Luckily, it is just as great!
3. All-purpose cleaner: DIY or Seventh Generation Free & Clear All-Purpose Cleaner
We typically make our own all purpose cleaner. It includes a few squirts of dish soap, water and white vinegar. Easy to make and works great! For DIY sprays, we love to use the spray bottles from the Zepp brand.
4. Toilet bowl cleaner- DIY
We haven’t found fragrance-free toilet bowl cleaners on the market that we like. So, we use good old baking soda and apple cider vinegar. We pour 3/4 cup of the vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda into the toilet. Then, the insides of the toilet bowl are sprayed with pure vinegar. We let that sit for 30 minutes and then scrub it.
5. Laundry detergent- We like any of the fragrance-free options for laundry detergent. The product by the All brand is what we are currently using.
6. Disinfectant- 70% rubbing alcohol
We are all about the elimination of germs in our house! Using 70% rubbing alcohol to do this has been a wonderful option for us. We spray it on high touch areas, electronics, grocery packaging and more.
7. Face wash- Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser
This facial cleanser is the best I have ever used. It gets my skin clean without drying it out. As with any of the Vanicream products- the ingredients are great. It is perfect for all skin types.
8. Body wash- Kirk’s 3-in-1 Head To Toe Nourishing Cleanser
There are so many good things to say about this body wash! Look out for my full review of it.
9. Body lotion- Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion
This is a great, light lotion that sinks in well. It provides just enough moisture for the skin and does actually soothe itchiness.
10. Sunscreen- CeraVe Tinted Sunscreen
I love this mineral sunscreen! I recently did a post about it so go check it out if you are interested.
11. Deodorant- Dry Idea Advanced Dry Unscented Deodorant
This is an awesome deodorant that is truly unscented/fragrance-free. It does everything the bottle states- provides long lasting odor protection and goes on clear. It has a natural sea salt, ocean smell to it that is really pleasant.
I have tried a few different fragrance free hair products and these two are the best ones for my hair. There are hair products that go with both of them (Earth Science Fragrance Free conditioner and Vanicream shampoo) but they don’t work well for me. I would recommend trying the shampoo and conditioner sets for yourself, though. My hair is pretty finicky and high maintenance!
So, there you have it!
These are all of what I think are the best, fragrance-free products for your hygiene and household purposes. Consider trying some of them and/or other fragrance-free ones out some time. It just might help you and others around you.
Do you like to use a lot of fragrances? Would you consider cutting back on them?
